A message from the Board Chair

“This last quarter has been an exciting one for our Hospice! We had an excellent Hike for Hospice, the Hospice garden is in full bloom and fundraising and grants have supported the many programs we offer for our residents and their families. It’s been a time of renewed hope as we learn to live with Covid. I couldn’t feel more optimistic as we move into summer. Thank you to our nurses, doctors, volunteers and staff for your support. Enjoy the warm weather and stay safe!”

Art in the Park

Join us this Saturday, July 2nd from 11 am to 2 pm for our Art in the Park Sale at O'Siyam Pavilion.

We have a lovely collection of artwork that we will be selling to raise funds to support the important programs and services that the Hospice Society provides to the Sea to Sky Community.

Bereavement Services - At times people hear hospice and only think about elderly loved ones at end of life.

Welcome Diana!

Introducing our new team member, Diana Gunstone. Diana takes on the role of program and volunteer coordinator.

Growing up as a middle child in a family of seven on the south shore of Montreal, Diana learned her project management and collaboration skills early as the “family organizer”.

As the new program and volunteer coordinator, I am now settling into my part-time role at the Sea to Sky Hospice Society and I am delighted to work with such a compassionate and passionate team!

The chemo tea has been my favourite aspect of volunteering so far!

Message from a volunteer

I have been privileged to spend time in the Hospice Unit. I volunteer approximately 4 hours a week and do what I can to help the nursing staff with patient laundry, dishwasher, replenishing towels and blankets in the warming oven and keeping the kitchen area tidy. It is not all about bustling around doing tasks.

On occasion a husband, wife or sibling might want to visit while their family member is sleeping or being cared for by the nurse. They want to sit quietly and talk to someone with a gentle listening ear.

This is not a job...this is a privilege and an honour to spend time with patients or families going through a difficult time.

Grants

The Sea to Sky Hospice Society has received two grants recently for the Bereavement Support Services.

Antje Cavanagh and Muff Hackett were on site to receive the cheque from Woodfibre LNG.

The Squamish Community Foundation also awarded the Hospice Society $2000 for this important program as part of the Community Enhancement Granting Program.

Is it time to have “the talk” with someone you love?

Christa Ovenell is the founder of Death’s Apprentice Education and Planning. Her company specializes in holistic advance care planning for individuals, families, and forward-thinking companies. She is a licensed funeral director and embalmer, as well as an end-of-life doula, community death educator and columnist on CBC Radio’s province-wide weekend morning show "North by Northwest”. She takes a heart-centred, pragmatic approach to difficult topics, helping people get comfortable thinking about, talking about, and planning for life’s only certainty. 16th Annual Hike for Hospice

This years Hike for Hospice, the 16th annual, supassed our goal of $35,000 and raised almost $45,000!

Thank you to one and all, our supporters, our sponsors, our amazing hikers, and our wonderful volunteers for making this year's event so successful!

The Sea to Sky Hospice Society actively promotes compassionate care and provides support to improve the quality of life for people of all cultures with life limiting illness, their loved ones and the bereaved throughout the Sea to Sky Corridor.
